Bricks and mortar might make a pub but it’s the people and personalities that turn a pub into a true ‘local’.

We first met Sammy Barrett in 2003. Warm and engaging he told us of his remarkable life, including his incredible journey from bonny Scotland to his new home at the Prince Alfred Hotel.

Sammy was an institution at the Prince Alfred and it was often said that we could set our clock by him. At exactly 4pm every day he would nestle into his favourite corner of the bar, just as he had done since December 1974.

To acknowledge his important place in PA’s rich history we surprised Sammy by installing a plaque to clearly identify his rightful place at the bar.

Sadly Sammy Barrett has since passed away but he remains an important part of the Prince Alfred Hotel story and he will never be forgotten.
